The Broken Girls

James manages to weave a seamless transition between past and present that sets the evocative mood for the entire novel. The vulnerability of each character is painstakingly portrayed, and the human ability to function when keeping the inner and outer ghosts at bay is masterfully demonstrated. Each heroine confronts abandonment differently, and reveals a unique coping facet or mechanism to move beyond the detritus of her past.
