Bloodring by Faith Hunter

I discovered this series quite by accident, and was soon borderline obsessed. The descriptions of an apocalyptic world gripped in an Ice Age, where mortals live in fear of an angel’s wrath, and demons hide down every deserted alley, drew me in.

Thorn must keep her wizardry a secret. All of her fellow mages are sequestered and exploited for their abilities. Thorn lives a quiet life as a jewelry-maker, flying under the radar. Until she builds a ward in front of the wrong witness.

Soon, Thorn is embroiled in a war against ancient evil and every creature wants to claim her. She is seraph-protected and loathed by humans, even though her unique destiny will save them all.
